AARP Volunteer Interest Form

Role: UI and Visual

Duration: April - July 2021

AARP’s Volunteer interest forms allow people to submit an application to be part of a range of volunteer programs that are spread across specific AARP programs or causes. AARP’s goal was to reduce the effort to complete the information needed and reduce the time it takes to submit a form.

Challenge

The challenge was that people interested in applying for an AARP volunteer position found the form repetitive and difficult to complete.

Research Insights

As part of the research phase, I worked closely with the research team to learn more about the current pain points. Through a series of surveys and data analysis, and user interviews we discovered the following insights:

  • The form took time to complete.

  • The form felt unorganized and messy.

  • The information needed was repetitive.

I reviewed the user flow and focused on removing any repetitive information that was asked in an earlier step and organizing the information needed into segments to organize the form.

Iteration

We conducted a usability test to understand if the changes made, reduced the time completing the form. We introduced small changes which included asterisks for required fields to communicate clearly which information was needed.

Takeaways

A key takeaway from this project was using KPIs to validate if the design changes were making an improvement and validate decisions being made. It was important to think about the goals of the research and the findings I wanted to present to the team.
